Faculty of Arts

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has been a renowned cultural, scientific and commercial centre for many centuries. It was here, in 1880, that VU University Amsterdam first opened its doors to students. VU stands for 'Vrije Universiteit' which means 'Free University'. Here, 'free' refers to freedom from state and church interference. VU University Amsterdam was established in 1880 by orthodox protestants. Nowadays it aims to be inspiring, innovative and involved.

VU University Amsterdam is working hard to ensure that all of its courses rank among the best in the country. VU University Amsterdam offers an inspiring study environment capable of providing students with the most suitable course for their needs.
VU University Amsterdam stands for high quality, fundamental, innovative and socially oriented research. The university has several leading research groups, all of which enjoy international recognition. In recent years, capacity and expertise have been pooled in large-scale programmes, enabling interactions between different disciplines to be exploited to the full.
VU's origins are rooted in the Christian faith. This is why we attach such great importance to our social role. We take the view that academic work cannot be divorced from the concerns of society, in terms of standards, values, philosophy and religion.

Throughout the past century, the university has continued to expand. It now comprises twelve faculties and has teaching facilities for 19,000 students.

The university campus and university hospital are situated in the south-western part of Amsterdam, one of the most dynamic and fast-growing business districts in the Netherlands. The international airport of Schiphol-Amsterdam is 10 kilometres away, just 8 minutes by train. With more than fifty undergraduate (or Bachelor’s) programmes and almost a hundred postgraduate (or Master’s) programmes, VU University Amsterdam offers a wide choice of study options. The programmes are of a high quality, the atmosphere is very conducive to study, and the teaching staff is easily accessible.

Our high level of research and education has caused VU to be one of the fastest rising universities in the Shanghai ranking, now in the top 3 in the Netherlands. The Dutch Elsevier survey shows that several programmes in the Faculty of Arts are actually the best in the Netherlands. For international students we offer the possibility of joining us as an exchange student. We also developed various International Master's programmes, completely taught in English.
